Monthly Meeting Topics

JULY 5, 2014 - Beverly Gentry of the DAR presents Myths or Facts.

AUGUST 2, 2014 - GUEST SPEAKER, Gunsmith Cliff Hammer gives us tips on firearms and portraying them accurately in our writing.

NOTE:  FOR THIS MONTH ONLY, the meeting will be held at the Citrus Shrine Club, 468 North Woodlake Avenue, Inverness.

Cliff Hammer, a native Floridian, has been actively engaged in shooting sports since he was five years old.  He is a life member of the following organizations:  The National Rifle Association (NRA), the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association (NMLRA), the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), and the Hernando Sportsman's Club.  He is an NRA certified range safety officer, and a range officer grades I and II of SASS.

He has participated in local, state, national, and international shooting competitions.  He is an amateur gunsmith and produces his own muzzle-loading firearms with which he has won national individual matches and set national records with a flintlock rifle.  He has extensive firearms.  Although he has many years of experience with firearms, Cliff does not consider himself an expert as he is still learning.  He hopes to impart some useful information about historical firearms to the group and will try to answer any questions from the audience.

In his presentation, Cliff will discuss the following:

  • Firearms from the time of invention and through the ages

  • The invention of gunpowder and its subsequent developments

  • Ammunition and its components

  • Physical examples of the mechanical action of firearms

  • Examples of the use of terms in everyday language based on antiquated firearms culture

  • Myths and misconceptions about firearms

  • Common errors made by authors about firearms
